HISTORIC OF LA CHOUANNIERE

La Chouannière was built in the 16th century and made entirely with tuffeau stones. This dwelling house had been for a long time the farm of the Castle of the Hayes of which the domain was used to stretch away on several hectares.

The Castle of the Hayes

This castle was the home of the seigniory of the Hayes as early as 1221. Important changes took place in the 18th century inside its wall.
Large hunting were organised in the 19th century by its owner, the marquess of Montesquiou.

The whole of the domain of the Hayes represented in the past the outbuilding of the castle.
This area was built near 1900 by the marquess following the desires of its wife which was originally British. The marchioness of Montesquiou wished the reconstitution of a real English village in Anjou.

The tuffeau is the precious stone of Anjou and Val de Loire which gives the elegance to the castles and the beautiful residences. It is a geologic characteristic which is the origin of the troglodyte phenomenon (large cave and grotto), the mushroom cultivation and the wine caves which can be visited near the borders of the Loire river.
